Opening Prayer
I recognize the Church as a clinic for the soul, where the errors of my heart are healed through the surgery of your Word. This divine medicine, harvested from heaven, retains its original power to overcome every spiritual disease, regardless of how much time has passed.
Heal my spiritual wounds and errors through the preaching of your truth; grant me the sincerity of heart required to receive this healing without cost, as silver cannot buy the peace you offer.
Amen.
Matthew 11:1-6
1And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him: 3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another? 4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen. 5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
St. John Chrysostom
St. John Chrysostom describes the Church as a “clinic” and God’s Word as the “medicine”. Unlike human doctors, this divine medicine “doesn’t lose its potency” over time. It heals “errors of the soul” rather than fleshly wounds. Chrysostom evaluates the “price” of this medicine: it costs nothing but “sincere intention.” In the Gospel, Christ’s works are the medicine that makes the blind see. The Word of God is the “excellent surgery” for our disordered desires.
St. John Chrysostom characterizes the Church as a “surgery for souls” where the primary remedy is the Word of God, a medicine more potent than any earthly herb. Unlike manmade treatments that lose strength over time, this divine medicine retains its original healing power across centuries and is effective against the most serious spiritual diseases. This treatment is accessible to both rich and poor alike, requiring only a sincere intention as the price of admission to the clinic.
“Treat the Bible as a heavenly medicine that never loses its potency over time and is available to the rich and poor alike.”
— St. John Chrysostom
Mary and the Magisterium
St. John Chrysostom describes the Church as a “clinic” for souls, where the “medicine of the Word” heals spiritual wounds. Mary, as Mother of the Church, shares in this maternal care, dispensing the “heavenly herbs” of divine teaching to rich and poor alike. She requires no “silver”, but only a “sincere intention”. In her, we see that the Word is not a historical artifact but a perennial source of health for the “maladies” of the spirit.
- Am I trying to heal my "soul wounds" with human "herbs" rather than the "words proceeding from heaven"?
- What "price" of sincerity am I willing to pay to obtain God’s healing grace?
Closing Prayer
Great Physician, thank You for the medicine of Scripture. Show me how to follow Your prescriptions faithfully.
Amen.
