October 19: The Brutality of the Scourging at the Pillar

The Brutality of the Scourging at the Pillar: Visionary Insights from Anne Catherine Emmerich

The Second Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary—The Scourging at the Pillar—contemplates the extreme physical and spiritual agony endured by Our Lord prior to His Crucifixion. While Pilate ordered the punishment hoping to satisfy the hostile crowd without condemning Jesus to death, the private visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich reveal the horrific brutality of the executioners, the touching unison of the Paschal lambs, and the heartbreaking exchange between Jesus and His Blessed Mother.

1. Pilate’s Cowardice and the Pillar in the Forum

Hoping to carry out his initial resolve to chastise Jesus and release Him, Pilate repeatedly declared that he found no guilt in the Lord. However, as the crowd shouted “Crucify Him!”, Pilate succumbed to pressure and commanded Jesus to be scourged according to Roman custom.

Executioners dragged the Savior across the forum to a whipping pillar standing alone in front of a hall near Pilate’s palace guardhouse. The pillar was not very high—a tall man with outstretched arms could reach the top—and was fitted with an iron ring at the apex alongside hooks in the middle.

2. The Six Executioners and the Heartbreaking Exchange with Mary

Six swarthy, half-intoxicated executioners—chosen from the most abject and cruel criminals in the praetorium—confronted Jesus at the pillar. Clad in tattered sandals and open leather jackets, these men violently tore Herod’s mantle of derision from Him.

Jesus trembled as He laid aside His own garments with swollen, bloody hands. Turning His head toward a corner of the porch, He cast a glance at His Mother, who stood nearby with the holy women. Speaking the words “Turn your eyes from Me!”, Jesus spared Mary from the full sight of His naked ignominy, prompting her to turn away and sink into the arms of her companions.

3. The First Wave: Ox Sinews and Flexible Rods

The executioners pulled Jesus’ upraised hands behind the iron ring at the top of the pillar, fastening them with a wooden peg so tightly that His feet barely touched the ground.

Two scourgers began the assault using flexible white wood, ox sinews, and strips of hard white leather. As the blows tore His sacred back from head to foot, Jesus quivered, uttering a soft, sweet-sounding wail that resembled a loving prayer amidst excruciating torture.

4. The Bleating of the Paschal Lambs

As the whips hissed and the populace shouted, a poignant sound echoed across Jerusalem: the gentle bleating of Paschal lambs being washed in the pool near the eastern sheep gate.

Once washed, the muzzled lambs were carried along the clean road to the Temple. Emmerich noted that the helpless bleating of these sacrificial lambs offered the only sounds in unison with the Savior’s sighs as He suffered as the true Lamb of God.

5. Intoxication, Iron Hooks, and Front-Facing Torture

After fifteen minutes, the first pair of torturers stopped to drink from a jug of thick, red juice provided by servants of the High Priests who slipped them money.

Replaced by two fresh executioners, the torture intensified:

  • Chains and Iron Hooks: The new torturers used whips composed of small chains or leather straps on iron handles, tipped with iron hooks that tore away pieces of skin and flesh from His ribs.
  • Bound to the Front: Because Jesus was too weak to stand, they unbound His hands, turned Him to face outward, and bound His chest, arms, and knees tightly to the pillar using fine cords.
  • A Body Transformed by Wounds: By the conclusion of the scourging, the Sacred Body of the Son of God was completely covered in swollen welts, cuts, and bleeding flesh from head to foot.

6. Devotional Reflection: Praying for the Gift of Faith

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Second Sorrowful Mystery is offered to petition for the theological virtue of Faith:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this second decade in honor of Your Scourging at the Pillar, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating the stripes and wounds of Christ reminds believers of the immense price paid for our redemption, moving our hearts to deep contrition and steadfast faith.
