October 23: The Resurrection and the Floating Light at the Tomb

The Resurrection and the Floating Light at the Tomb: Visionary Insights from Anne Catherine Emmerich

The First Glorious Mystery of the Rosary—The Resurrection—celebrates the triumphant victory of Our Lord Jesus Christ over death and sin. While the Gospel accounts record the empty tomb and the angelic announcements on Easter morning, the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich offer a breathtaking glimpse into the exact moment of the Resurrection, describing the soul of Christ descending in light, His miraculous exit through the burial cloth, and the supernatural phenomena that shook Golgotha.

1. The Descent of the Soul and Reanimation

In Emmerich’s vision, the Resurrection began when the blessed soul of Jesus descended in dazzling splendor through the rocky roof of the tomb, flanked by two warrior angels and surrounded by resplendent celestial figures. The radiant soul inclined over the sacred body and merged into one with it. As life returned, Emmerich beheld the Savior’s living limbs moving beneath the swathing bands, and His glorified, luminous body emerged smoothly from the side of the winding sheet as if passing through His own wounded Side.

2. Floating Through Rock and the Trembling Earth

Following His reanimation, Christ did not wait for the heavy tomb door to be removed; He floated upward in sheer glory directly through the solid rock. At that same instant, a great earthquake struck the garden, causing lanterns to swing wildly and flames to flash around. A warrior angel shot down like lightning from Heaven, rolled the heavy stone to the right of the entrance, and sat upon it. Overcome by the violent tremors and angelic brightness, the Roman guards fell stunned to the ground, lying stiff and contorted as if dead.

3. The Orderly Grave Linens and the Heavenly Messengers

When Mary Magdalen and the holy women arrived carrying aromatic spices and precious balm, they discovered the guards lying paralyzed and the tomb stone rolled away. Peering inside the brightly illuminated tomb, they observed that the burial linens remained in perfect order:

  • The Collapsed Winding Sheet: The large winding sheet lay undisturbed and empty, holding only the aromatic herbs.
  • The Long Bandage: The long cloth binding lay twisted at full length on the outer edge of the stone couch.
  • The Head Scarf: The linen scarf with which the Blessed Virgin had wrapped Jesus’ head rested separately to the right.

Inside, two angels clad in white, shining priestly robes instructed the terrified women not to fear, proclaiming that the Crucified Lord had risen and would go before His disciples into Galilee.

4. The Encounter in the Garden ( “Rabboni!” )

Outside in the gray light of dawn, Mary Magdalen lingered near a palm tree, weeping bitterly in her search for the Lord. Spying a figure holding a spade and wearing a flat hat, she mistook Him for the gardener and begged to know where He had placed her Master.

When Jesus spoke her name—“Mary!”—she instantly recognized His well-known voice, fell to her knees, and cried out “Rabboni!” (Master!). Jesus raised His hand to check her impetuous rush, telling her not to touch Him as He had not yet ascended to His Father, and sent her to bear the glad tidings to His brethren.

5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for the Gift of Faith

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the First Glorious Mystery is offered to petition for the theological virtue of Faith:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this first decade in honor of Your Resurrection, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating the glory of Easter morning fills the Christian soul with unshakeable hope, reminding us that Christ’s victory over the grave opens the gates of eternal life for all who believe.
