October 25: The Fiery Tongues and Re-Consecration at Pentecost

The Fiery Tongues and Re-Consecration at Pentecost: Visionary Insights from Anne Catherine Emmerich

The Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary—The Descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost—commemorates the birth of the Church, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room. While the Acts of the Apostles records the sound of a driving wind and tongues of fire, the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich provide a vivid account of the liturgical preparation of the Upper Room, the intricate architecture of the descending heavenly light, and the subsequent mission to the Pool of Bethsaida.

1. Liturgical Preparation and Green Garlands in the Upper Room

On the eve of Pentecost, the interior of the Upper Room was transformed for the feast. Green bushes holding vases of flowers were arranged throughout the hall, and garlands of greenery were looped from side to side. The screens separating the side halls were opened to accommodate the assembly.

St. Peter, dressed in episcopal robes, stood before a table covered in red and white beneath a lamp in front of the curtained Holy of Holies. Following prayers and hymns, Peter broke and distributed blessed bread first to the Virgin Mary, then to the Apostles and disciples. After midnight, a quiet stillness fell over the house as all present stood in silent, recollected prayer.

2. The Ball of Light and the Sevenfold Intersecting Rays

Toward morning, a supernatural movement stirred across nature. Above the Mount of Olives, a glittering white cloud of light appeared, floating toward Mount Sion like a round ball borne along on a soft, warm breeze. As it hovered directly over the house of the Last Supper, it sank with a rushing, roaring noise like a mighty wind.

As the cloud descended, an intricate structure of divine light was revealed:

  • The Sevenfold Rays: Streams of brilliant white light shot down from the cloud, intersecting one another in sevenfold rays.
  • Fiery Drops: Below each point of intersection, the rays resolved into fine threads of light and falling drops of fire.
  • The Rainbow Figure: At the central intersection point, a rainbow-colored light surrounded a luminous figure with wing-like rays of light attached to its shoulders.
  • Flames of Diverse Colors: The flames rested upon each person present in different colors and degrees of intensity, filling their hearts with courage and joy.

Amidst the emotional outpouring, the Blessed Virgin Mary remained perfectly calm, retaining a quiet and holy self-possession.

3. Kneeling for Mary’s Blessing and the Five Ordinations

Following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Peter imposed hands on five Apostles—James the Less, Bartholomew, Mathias, Thomas, and Jude Thaddeus—to assist in teaching and administering Baptism. During his ordination, St. Jude Thaddeus experienced a vision in which he embraced the Body of the Lord to his chest.

Before departing to preach, the newly ordained Apostles knelt to receive the maternal benediction of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Emmerich noted that prior to Christ’s Ascension, this blessing had been received standing, but was henceforth received on bended knee.

4. The Miracle of Tongues at the Pool of Bethsaida

The Apostles and disciples proceeded two by two in a solemn procession from the Upper Room to the Pool of Bethsaida, where public sheds and lodging houses were packed with feast pilgrims.

The five newly ordained Apostles took positions at the five entrances of the pool, while St. Peter stepped onto a teacher’s chair placed on the broad third terrace. As Peter and the Apostles spoke with enthusiasm, the vast crowd listened in astonishment, for every listener heard the instruction in their own native language.

5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for the Gift of Faith

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Third Glorious Mystery is offered to petition for the theological virtue of Faith:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this third decade in honor of Pentecost, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating the fire of Pentecost inspires believers to welcome the gifts of the Holy Spirit, courageously witnessing to the Gospel in daily life.
