The Heavenly Court and Eternal Throne: The Coronation of Mary
The Fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary—The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary—brings the Rosary to its triumphant conclusion, contemplating Our Lady enthroned as Queen of Heaven and Earth. While the preceding mysteries trace her earthly journey from her humble Fiat at Nazareth to her bodily Assumption, this final mystery unveils her eternal exaltation at the right hand of her divine Son. In the compilation Mysteries of the Rosary, this vision is adapted from Venerable Mary of Agreda’s The Mystical City of God to complete the Rosary sequence.
1. Exemption from Judgment and Entrance into Glory
Our Redeemer Jesus entered Heaven leading the pure soul of His Mother at His right hand. Because she was exempted from original sin and chosen as the privileged Queen above all children of Adam, Mary alone of all mortals deserved exemption from particular judgment.
No account of her life was demanded, for she had lived in perfect conformity with the divine will. Instead of standing before the tribunal to be judged, she was brought forward to be seated at the right hand of the Judge to reign alongside Him for all eternity.
2. Christ’s Presentation of His Mother Before the Trinity
Before the assembled ranks of angels and saints, Christ presented His Mother to the Eternal Father and the Holy Spirit. Uttering solemn words before the enthralled heavenly host, the Incarnate Word proclaimed her merits:
- The Rose Among Thorns: Christ declared her to be “born as the rose among thorns, untouched, pure and beautiful”, worthy of being placed upon a celestial throne.
- Unswerving Obedience: She preserved every grace and talent communicated to her, never swerving from the divine will at any moment of her earthly life.
- A Mother’s Reward: As her life had conformed to His in suffering and holiness, Christ declared it fitting that she share in His eternal glory and majesty.
3. The Sovereign Seat at the Right Hand of the Trinity
Approved by the Eternal Father and the Holy Spirit, the decree of the Incarnate Word raised the soul and glorified body of Mary to the royal throne of the Most Holy Trinity.
Placed as Empress at the right hand of her Son, Mary possesses a unique degree of heavenly vision, comprehension, and joy. While an infinite distance remains between the uncreated Divinity and any creature, Mary surpasses all angels, saints, and seraphim in glory, reflecting the light of Christ more perfectly than any other created being.
4. Recompense for the Fall of the Angels
As celestial praises filled Heaven, the voice of the Eternal Father resounded from the throne. He proclaimed that while other rational creatures had abused their freedom through sin and disobedience, Mary’s fidelity fulfilled all the pleasure of His holy will.
By her humble subjection and total obedience, Mary compensated for the falling away of disobedient creatures. To her were awarded the crowns and rewards originally prepared for the fallen angels who had rejected divine grace.
5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for Final Perseverance
In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Fifth Glorious Mystery is offered to petition for the gift of Faith and final perseverance:
“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this fifth decade in honor of The Coronation, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”
Contemplating Mary crowned as Queen of Heaven reassures believers that her maternal intercession is all-powerful before the throne of God, guiding her children safely to eternal life.
