October 26: The Floating Couch and Heavenly Ascent

The Floating Couch and Heavenly Ascent: The Assumption of Mary

The Fourth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary—The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—celebrates the singular privilege of Our Lady being taken up body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. While Sacred Scripture portrays the Queen clothed with the sun (Apocalypse 12:1), the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich provide a deeply detailed account of her peaceful falling asleep (Dormition), the miraculous floating couch, her hidden burial in the grotto, and the discovery of the empty shroud by St. Thomas.

1. The Final Sacraments and the Floating Couch

Gathered around Mary in her final hours in Ephesus, the Apostles ministered to their Holy Mother. St. Peter wore a cross hanging on his breast containing the Blessed Sacrament, while St. John bore a small, white chalice with a short stem containing the Most Sacred Blood.

After Peter administered the Last Anointing and Holy Communion, a magnificent supernatural phenomenon took place:

  • The Pathway of Light: A dazzling beam of light arose from Mary’s room directly to the throne of the Most Holy Trinity.
  • The Floating Body: As Mary raised her arms toward the Heavenly Jerusalem, her body—enveloped in all its wrappings—floated so high above her couch that onlookers could clearly see beneath it.
  • Reunion with Her Divine Son: Floating in ecstasy, Mary’s soul soared to meet Jesus, whose flashing Wounds emanated brilliant celestial light. Christ received His Mother and placed a scepter in her hand, pointing across the whole circumference of the earth.

2. The Snow-White Coffin and the Hidden Grotto

At the hour of None (three o’clock in the afternoon)—the exact hour Christ had died upon the Cross—Mary surrendered her soul. Her radiant body sank gently back upon the couch with eyes closed and hands crossed upon her chest.

The Apostles prepared her holy body with profound solemnity:

  • The Snow-White Coffin: Her body was placed inside a coffin made of snow-white wood, fitted with an arched cover fastened securely by three gray leather straps.
  • The Procession: Six Apostles carried the litter in turns to a grotto tomb situated half an hour away.
  • Camouflaging the Tomb: After placing the coffin inside a hollow in the rock behind a wicker screen, the Apostles dug a trench outside the entrance and planted it thickly with blooming bushes and berry-bearing shrubs, making the tomb accessible only through dense underwood.

3. The Night Ascent and the Empty Linens

On the night following her burial, the bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary took place. While several Apostles prayed in the garden outside the cave, a broad pathway of light descended from Heaven, filled with concentric circles of angelic choirs.

Led by her Divine Son, Mary’s resplendent soul floated into the tomb, re-entered her sacred body, and arose radiant in her glorified flesh. Escorted by the entire heavenly court, she ascended in triumph to the Heavenly Jerusalem.

4. St. Thomas and the Husk of Grave Clothes

The following day, St. Thomas arrived with two companions. Overcome with grief at missing her passing, Thomas wept bitterly and begged to see her body.

The Apostles led Thomas to the grotto and unfastened the gray straps binding the white coffin. Upon lifting the lid, they were filled with intense astonishment:

  • The Empty Shell: The body had vanished, leaving only the white winding sheets lying in perfect order like an empty husk or shell.
  • Untouched Bandages: The face cover was drawn slightly apart, and the swathing bands of the hands and arms lay separate, as if gently drawn off without disturbing their form.

Realizing she had been taken up into Heaven, St. John cried out, “She is no longer here!”, and the Apostles reverently gathered the grave linens to preserve as precious relics. Emmerich also noted that upon Mary’s Assumption, a vast multitude of souls was freed from Purgatory.

5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for Mary’s Intercession

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Fourth Glorious Mystery is offered to petition for the gift of Faith and eternal union with God:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this fourth decade in honor of The Assumption, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating Our Lady’s bodily Assumption reminds believers that earthly life is a pilgrimage toward Heaven, where Mary reigns as our loving advocate and mother.
