October 5: The Supernatural Rays of the Incarnation

The Supernatural Rays of the Incarnation: A Mystical Perspective on the Annunciation

When the Blessed Virgin Mary gave her humble consent—”May it be done unto me according to your word“—the pivotal moment of human history occurred. In the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, this moment of the Incarnation is described not merely as a quiet interior event, but as a dazzling manifestation of heavenly light, divine order, and cosmic beauty.

1. The Vision of the Holy Spirit and the Three Rays

Upon Mary’s acceptance of the divine message, her soul entered into a deeper ecstasy. In her vision, Emmerich witnessed the ceiling of Mary’s chamber vanish, replaced by a pathway of light stretching upward into the opened heavens toward a vision of the Most Holy Trinity.

At that instant, an apparition of the Holy Spirit descended along the beam of light. Emmerich noted that the countenance of the apparition was human in form, surrounded by dazzling splendor as though enveloped in wings. From the chest and hands of this divine apparition issued three distinct streams of light. These three streams descended upon Mary, penetrated the right side of her body, and united into a single flame beneath her heart.

2. Luminous Transparency and the Infant Redeemer

As the three streams of light merged under Mary’s heart, an immediate physical transformation took place in the visionary sphere. Mary became completely luminous and transparent, as though physical opacity vanished before the flood of heavenly light.

Within her interior, Mary beheld the immediate result of the Holy Spirit’s action: the Incarnate Son of God appeared as a tiny human figure of light, perfectly formed in every detail down to His little fingers.

While the streams of glory vanished back into the heavens, showers of half-blown roses and tiny green leaves floated down the pathway of light, resting gently upon the Virgin.

3. Mary’s Immediate Interior Understanding

As Mary was absorbed in contemplation of the Redeemer within her, her interior mind lay open, imparting a profound understanding of her Son’s mission:

  • A Supernatural Kingdom: She understood that Christ’s kingdom would not be an earthly political power, but a supernatural realm, and that the Church—the House of Jacob—would gather regenerate humanity together.
  • Victorious Redemption Through Suffering: She knew her Son was the promised King who would purify His people and render them victorious, but also realized that redemption would require Him to suffer and die.

4. Why Christ Spent Nine Months in the Womb

A unique theological insight provided in Emmerich’s vision addresses why the Son of God chose to spend nine months in Mary’s womb rather than appearing fully grown like Adam.

Emmerich was shown that because human conception and birth had been rendered unholy by the Fall of Adam and Eve, Christ willed to be conceived and born as a infant specifically to sanctify human origin at its root. Furthermore, Christ did not come earlier in human history because Mary was the first and only woman preserved free from original sin, preparing an immaculate tabernacle for the Savior.
