Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for the “divine mysteries” revealed to Thy saints, which illuminate the path to Thy Mother’s Sorrowful Heart. We ask for the grace to recognize the depth of her tears as a source of our own consolation and spiritual clarity.
Grant us a heart open to these mystical promises. May we never dismiss the power of a single Hail Mary said in compassion for her dolors, but rather trust in the treasury of grace Thou hast placed in her hands for our salvation.

St. Hildegard of Bingen and St. Robert Bellarmine
The legacies of St. Hildegard of Bingen and St. Robert Bellarmine represent the union of mystical vision and doctrinal defense. St. Hildegard, the “Sibyl of the Rhine,” saw the Passion through the eyes of Mary in her revelations, while St. Robert Bellarmine, a Doctor of the Church, utilized his vast learning to establish the devotion to Mary’s dolors as a bedrock of Catholic life. Their devotion provided a “source of grace and consolation” for the wider Christian community, teaching that to submerge oneself in Mary’s sorrows is to be “wholly covered with the Precious Blood of Jesus.”
Our Lord and His Mother have made disproportionate promises to those who honor her sorrows, highlighting the “treasury of grace” available to the devout:
The Four Special Favors (Revealed to St. Elizabeth of Hungary):
- Perfect Contrition: True sorrow for all sins before death.
- Protection in Tribulation: Special assistance, particularly in the hour of death.
- Impressed Memory: The memory of the Passion will be deeply impressed upon the soul.
- Maternal Disposal: These souls are committed to Mary’s hands to be disposed of according to her pleasure.
The Seven Promises to St. Bridget (For those reciting seven Hail Marys daily while meditating on her tears):
- I will grant peace to their families.
- They will be enlightened about the divine Mysteries.
- I will console them in their pains and accompany them in their work.
- I will give them as much as they ask for (provided it aligns with the Divine Will).
- I will defend them in spiritual battles.
- They will visibly see the face of their Mother at the moment of death.
- They will be taken directly to eternal happiness; all sins forgiven.

Mary and the Magisterium
The Church fosters the “abiding practice” of this devotion through the Servite Order (Servants of Mary), founded in 1223. Mary herself invested the seven holy founders with the Black Scapular, a garment meant to remind the wearer perpetually of her sorrows. The Magisterium has officially approved and enriched these devotions, ensuring they remain a central safeguard for the faithful, drawing them directly into the depths of the Heart of our Saviour.
