The Parable of the King’s Son: Visionary Insights into the Proclamation of the Kingdom

The Third Luminous Mystery of the Rosary—The Proclamation of the Kingdom—recalls Christ calling all people to repent and believe the Gospel. Following His baptism in the Jordan, Jesus stood among the crowds as St. John the Baptist bore public witness to Him as the Son of God. Before withdrawing into the wilderness, Our Lord delivered a unique instruction recorded in the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich: the Parable of the King’s Son.

1. The Context of the Parable at the Jordan

Addressing the assembled listeners near the Jordan River, Jesus announced that He would temporarily withdraw from them for a short time. He instructed the people to prepare themselves in the meantime through penance and good works.

Jesus promised that upon His return, all who were sick and afflicted could come to Him for healing and consolation. He explained that He would return to lay the firm foundations of the Kingdom given to Him by His Heavenly Father.

2. Preparing for the Throne in Solitude

To help the crowd understand His impending departure, Jesus illustrated His mission using the parable of a king’s son.

In this parable, a prince who is about to take possession of his throne first withdraws into solitude. While in solitude, the king’s son prepares himself and implores the assistance and guidance of his father. Through this image, Christ prefigured His own upcoming period of fasting and prayer in the wilderness prior to establishing His spiritual Kingdom on earth.

3. The Ridicule of the Pharisees

Among the numerous listeners present near the Jordan were several Pharisees who treated Christ’s words with mockery.

Scoffing at the parable, they sarcastically asked whether Jesus was not the carpenter’s son, but rather the supposititious child of a king. They mockingly questioned if He was about to assemble subjects and march upon Jerusalem to claim an earthly throne. These listeners considered the idea foolish because they fixated entirely on an earthly kingdom and deliverance from Roman oppression.

4. The True Heavenly Kingdom

In response to their worldly expectations, Jesus clarified that His message signified a spiritual realm—the Heavenly Jerusalem.

He explained that while the severity of the Old Law brought death to those who touched the Ark of the Covenant, grace was now poured forth through the Son of Man. Just as the Israelites passed through the Jordan into the Promised Land, those who remain faithful and observe God’s commands are introduced into the freedom of the Law of grace.

5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for the Gift of Faith

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Third Luminous Mystery is offered to petition for the theological virtue of Faith:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this third decade in honor of Your proclaiming the kingdom, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating the King’s Son seeking his Father’s assistance in solitude reminds believers to cultivate interior prayer and place total trust in God’s eternal Kingdom.
