October 16: A Vision of the Transfiguration Grotto

A Vision of the Transfiguration Grotto: Visionary Insights from Anne Catherine Emmerich

The Fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary—The Transfiguration—recalls the glorious moment when Our Lord revealed His divine majesty to Peter, James, and John on Mount Tabor. While the Gospel accounts describe Christ’s face shining like the sun and His garments becoming white as light, the private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich provide a vivid look into the secluded grotto on the mountain, the night time descent of angelic choirs, and the three prophetic figures who appeared alongside the Savior.

1. The Ascent of Mount Tabor and the Hidden Grotto

Jesus ascended Mount Tabor in the afternoon, taking with Him Peter, James the Greater, and John, while sending the other disciples to teach and heal in surrounding villages. The climb took nearly two hours because Jesus paused frequently at various caves made memorable by the sojourns of ancient prophets, explaining deep mysteries along the way.

Upon reaching the summit—a walled, open place filled with sweet-scented herbs and a cold water reservoir—Jesus led the three Apostles into a deep grotto hidden behind an overhanging rock that formed a door to the cave. As darkness fell outside, Jesus retired into this subterranean vault to pray.

2. Celestial Perfumes and Midnight Light

As Jesus prayed and instructed His Apostles in the dark cave, a supernatural transformation began:

  • Increasing Splendor: Jesus grew brighter and brighter until He appeared completely transparent. The light emanating from Him illuminated the grotto so intensely that every small plant on the ground could be clearly distinguished.
  • Streams of Delight: Angelic spirits hovered around Christ, accompanied by alternate streams of celestial perfumes, divine delights, and interior contentment that washed over the Apostles.
  • The Midnight Peak: Around midnight, the glory reached its height. A shining pathway reached from Heaven to earth, filled with moving angelic spirits of various choirs—some as faces peeping through light, others in priestly vestments or warrior garb. Overcome by the divine light, the three Apostles covered their heads and lay prostrate in ecstatic awe.

3. The Three Figures: Moses, Elijah, and Malachi

In the midst of this heavenly illumination, three shining figures approached Jesus along the pathway of light:

  • Moses: Appearing tall, grave, and majestic in a long garment, Moses bore the impress of purity and strict rectitude, with two projecting bumps upon his forehead. He expressed deep joy at seeing the Savior who was fulfilling the types of the Law, making specific reference to the Paschal lamb.
  • Elijah: In contrast to Moses, Elijah appeared more refined, lovable, and of a sweeter disposition. Both Moses and Elijah appeared in the bloom of youth rather than aged or decrepit.
  • Malachi: The third figure was Malachi, who appeared entirely ethereal, spiritual, and silent—looking like an angel and the personification of strength and repose.

4. Detailed Discourse on the Passion

Jesus conversed at length with Moses and Elijah about His upcoming Redemption, detailing His future Passion point by point. Moses and Elijah responded with words of deep sympathy, consolation, and praise for God’s eternal mercy.

When describing His exaltation on the Cross, Jesus extended His arms and proclaimed: “So shall the Son of Man be lifted up!”. At those words, His robe flashed with a bluish-white gleam, and Jesus, the Prophets, and the three prostrate Apostles were all raised above the earth in divine glory.

5. Devotional Reflection: Praying for the Gift of Faith

In the Rosary meditations adapted from St. Louis de Montfort, the Fourth Luminous Mystery is offered to petition for the theological virtue of Faith:

“We offer You, O Lord Jesus, this fourth decade in honor of Your Transfiguration, and we ask of You, through this mystery and through Mary’s intercession, the gift of Faith. Amen.”

Contemplating the glory of Tabor strengthens believers during times of spiritual darkness, assuring us that the cross leads ultimately to the victory of divine light.
