Opening Prayer
Holy Martyrs Wenceslaus and Lorenzo Ruiz, you who stood firm in the face of death, grant us the fortitude to remain faithful to Christ until our last breath. May your example of victory in the “final battle” embolden us to trust in the maternal defense of Mary.
O Mother of Sorrows, by the love with which thou didst stand by the Cross, we commend to thy maternal heart the “last three hours” of our lives. When our strength fails and the enemy approaches, stand by us as thou didst stand by Jesus, and present our souls to thy Divine Son.

Wenceslaus and Lorenzo Ruiz represent the universal reach of the martyr’s crown. Their deaths were not endings but strategic victories in the “ultimate battle,” demonstrating that the soul surrendered to God through Mary cannot be vanquished.
St. Vincent Pallotti held the conviction that no devotee of the Sorrowful Mother would be lost, noting that evil spirits are “commanded by God not to assail with temptations in the hour of death” those who have practiced this devotion. This confidence transforms the “death chamber” from a place of dread into a sanctuary of peace. Devotion to her dolors is the ultimate spiritual insurance; it allows the Christian to face the “rage of Hell” with a composure rooted in the fact that Mary has already conquered the darkness of Calvary.

Mary and the Magisterium
The Church invokes Mary as the “Comforter of the Afflicted” and “Protectress of the Forsaken.” The theology of the Magisterium teaches that Mary’s presence at the Cross was a “holocaust and victim of propitiation” for our sins. By offering her Son, she became the Mother of all men, especially the dying. Her intercession is the bridge between the “terrors of death” and the “peace of Paradise“.
